The Pros And Cons Of Having Your Dog Euthanized At Home

Posted on

When the time comes to finally say goodbye to your dog, you have a choice to make. You can take them to the vet's office to be euthanized, or you can have a mobile service come to your home and euthanize your dog there. In-home dog euthanasia is becoming more common, and it is the right choice for many pet owners. However, this option does have some downfalls, too. Here are the pros and cons to consider before having your dog euthanized at home.

Pro: Your dog won't have to endure a car ride

Some dogs really don't enjoy riding in the car. And if your dog is sick and unwell, riding in the car may be extra tough for them. You don't want that to be one of the last things they experience in life, and if you opt for at-home euthanasia, it does not have to be. Your dog can enjoy a final day in the comfort of their own home without saying goodbye.

Con: Your dog won't have access to vet care in the meantime

Some dogs may benefit from having supplemental oxygen or IV fluids during their last few days. This care is only available at a vet's office, typically. If you opt for at-home euthanasia rather than taking your dog to the vet, then you won't have access to these services. This may not be a big deal for some dogs, but it is for some.

Pro: You may find more comfort at home

Saying goodbye to your dog is never easy. You'll probably cry. You'll want to seek the comfort of friends and family members. This is easier to do in the comfort of your own home. You can invite some close friends over for support, have a little funeral after, cuddle on the couch, or do whatever helps you grieve best.

Con: Not all dogs like visitors

If your dog gets nervous when people visit your home, or if they tend to be aggressive and defensive towards strangers, then at-home euthanasia may not be the best choice. The dog may be upset by the presence of the veterinarian, which won't be a nice way to spend their final hours.

At-home euthanasia is a good choice for many dogs. However, if your dog needs supportive vet care in their final days, or if they are not friendly to visitors, you may want to have them euthanized at the vet's office instead.
